A physiotherapist possesses specialized expertise in restoring, maintaining, and improving a person’s physical function and mobility. Physiotherapists are needed across various sectors, from hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, sports clubs, fitness centers, to homecare services. Their presence is vital in enhancing public health and well-being.

However, the availability of physiotherapists remains far from adequate. According to data from the Indonesian Physiotherapist Association (IFI), as of July 2024, only 16,527 physiotherapists were registered. Meanwhile, the ideal number needed by 2025 is estimated at 35,000 to 40,000 physiotherapists. This means Indonesia still lacks approximately 18,500 to 23,500 physiotherapists to meet that standard. In response to this challenge, Bhakti Wiyata Institute of Health Sciences (IIK Bhakta) has launched a new undergraduate program: the Bachelor of Physiotherapy. This program was officially established through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Decree No. 216/B/O/2025.

Excellence: Focus on Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy and Wellness

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy program at IIK Bhakta comes with a competitive edge, focusing on two key areas that are highly relevant to today’s needs: Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy and Wellness.

The Head of the Physiotherapy Program, Whida Rahmawati, SST.FT, M.Kes explains that Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy emphasizes the treatment of disorders involving muscles, bones, and the nervous system, such as joint pain, pinched nerves, scoliosis, sports injuries, and stroke.

Meanwhile, Wellness Physiotherapy focuses on prevention, improving fitness, posture correction, quality of life enhancement, and promoting healthy lifestyles across all age groups. “Our program prepares graduates for successful careers in the healthcare sector or further studies toward becoming licensed professional physiotherapists,” Whida stated.

Adaptive Curriculum, Globally Competent

The curriculum is integratively designed in alignment with both national and international standards. Students are equipped not only with theoretical knowledge but also with clinical skills, field practice, and modern technological applications in physiotherapy.

Whida explains that physiotherapy is a unique discipline that merges science and art in understanding human movement and delivering effective rehabilitation. As a science, it follows evidence-based principles to diagnose and treat conditions involving musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiovascular systems.

As an art, physiotherapy incorporates individualized approaches tailored to each patient's biopsychosocial context during recovery. “Our program teaches a holistic approach to analyzing, diagnosing, and rehabilitating patients, enabling graduates to deliver effective, personalized solutions in Neuromusculoskeletal and Wellness Physiotherapy, contributing to the vision of a Golden Indonesia,” said Whida.

Supported by Experienced Faculty and Modern Facilities

As the 23rd academic program at IIK Bhakta, the Bachelor of Physiotherapy will be led by experienced lecturers and practitioners from various fields including neurology, orthopedics, and community physiotherapy. With an extensive professional network, IIK Bhakta—recipient of the Silver Award at the 2021 SNI Awards—also provides opportunities for students to intern and engage in collaborative research with reputable institutions. Moreover, students benefit from state-of-the-art learning facilities, including smart classrooms and 63 fully equipped modern laboratories.

“Our graduates will not only be ready to work in hospitals but can also become fitness consultants, sports therapists, or wellness advocates in the community,” said IIK Bhakta Rector, Prof. Dr. Apt. Muhamad Zainuddin.

Promising and Global Career Prospects

Graduates of IIK Bhakta’s Bachelor of Physiotherapy program will have comprehensive competencies and strong competitiveness, ready to work in various sectors such as:

“Physiotherapy is not just about treating the sick but also about keeping people healthy and active throughout their lives,” Prof. Zainuddin emphasized.
