When Is the Right Time to Brush Your Teeth? Here's the Answer!

Brushing your teeth regularly is a daily obligation that must not be skipped. There are many benefits to brushing our teeth regularly, including:

  1. Reducing the growth of rapidly multiplying bacteria.
  2. Cleaning dental plaque within the oral cavity.
  3. Having a fresh breath and increased confidence.

So, when is the right time to brush your teeth for maximum results? Good dental care starts with the timing of tooth brushing. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste for two minutes each time. You can brush your teeth in the morning and at night while paying attention to the following:

Morning: The best time to brush your teeth in the morning is after breakfast. However, it's advisable to wait at least 30-60 minutes between breakfast and your tooth brushing schedule. The reason for this is that during eating, the pH of saliva will decrease, causing the acidity in the oral cavity to increase. Brushing your teeth when the mouth is acidic can potentially weaken and erode the enamel layer.

While waiting to brush your teeth, you can do a few things to reduce the acidic nature that can harm your teeth, such as rinsing your mouth with a glass of water or chewing sugar-free gum.

Night: At night, the ideal time to brush your teeth is before bedtime. If you skip this, bacteria will multiply faster and last longer in your mouth. During sleep, there is no activity in the oral cavity, so the pH becomes acidic. This makes bacterial and germ activity increase twice as fast compared to during the day.

Saliva, which acts as self-cleansing, will also decrease. Therefore, if you don't brush your teeth before bed, you are giving bacteria a chance to multiply in your oral cavity. Bacteria will convert leftover food into acid that can dissolve tooth enamel. As a result, dental issues like cavities and tooth decay can occur.

By paying attention to the right time to brush your teeth, dental damage and oral diseases can be prevented. Additionally, don't forget to clean between your teeth using dental floss. Increase your consumption of water, consume fruits, and limit your intake of overly sugary foods.
