"Listen to the voices of those around you. Each person undoubtedly possesses a distinct voice type. Some are capable of reaching high notes, while others can only reach lower ones. The human ability to span these notes is referred to as range.
Based on their characteristics, Member of the Student Choir Unit (Paduan Suara or Padus) of IIK Bhakta Marella Firsta Joansyah explains the details of the division of human voice types as follows.
Female Voice Women have varying voice ranges, including high and low pitches.
Soprano
Soprano is a high-pitched voice type possessed by adult women. The soprano voice can reach from C4 to G5. Sopranos can be classified based on the quality of their vocal tone, including:
Dramatic Soprano, which is expressive and powerful Lyric Soprano, which is light and sweet Coloratura Soprano, with a high-pitched range and extreme vocal agility. Some singers with soprano voices include Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Whitney Houston.
Mezzo-Soprano
This is a middle-range voice. It is not too high or too low. This voice type can reach from A3 to A5. Additionally, this range usually includes the lower A, middle C, second F, upper G, and middle C.
An example of a singer with this voice type is Beyonce.
Alto
Alto can also be called contralto. It represents the lowest female vocal range. The alto voice should be weighty, deep, and commanding. This voice type can only reach from F to D2. An example of a singer with this voice type is Adele.
Male Voice Tenor
Not only women, but men also have a high-pitched voice type called tenor. This voice type can reach from B to G1. If the soprano role in women is energetic and prima donna-like, then the tenor role in men is masculine and powerful.
Based on the color and agility of the voice, tenors can be divided into dramatic tenor, lyric tenor, and heroic tenor. An example of a singer with a tenor voice is Freddie Mercury.
Countertenor
Also known as contra tenor. The vocal range of a countertenor is higher and broader compared to the tenor voice type. Men with this voice type usually sound similar to women. One singer with this voice type is Alfred Deller.
Baritone
Not too high, not too low. That's a baritone. The word 'Baritone' comes from the Greek language, meaning a deep voice. Its vocal range spans from A to F1, depending on the circumstance.
Originally, the term 'Baritone' was used for the lowest male voice. However, in the 17th century, it was changed to refer to the middle-range male voice. An example of a singer with a baritone voice is David Bowie.
Bass
The lowest male voice is called Bass. Its vocal range spans from E to C1. The bass voice character is very low, deep, and can balance the authority of the alto voice in females. In instrumental music, the bass voice is often used as the foundation or groundwork of harmonic lines.
Examples of singers with this voice type are Barry White and Louis Armstrong.
These are the types and characteristics of female and male voices. If you wish to join the Student Choir Unit (Paduan Suara or Padus) of IIK Bhakta, participants must undergo an audition. This determines the voice allocation for the members. "We determine this by playing the piano while listening to the participants' voices," says Marella.
