Depression is a mood disorder that causes continuous feelings of sadness and loss of interest. Depression typically affects a person's thinking and behavior, and can trigger various physical and emotional issues.
Someone experiencing depression may struggle with daily activities and even feel that life has lost its purpose. Those suffering from depression often tend to become socially isolated, leading to thoughts of suicide. Moreover, they are prone to self-harm, such as cutting specific body parts.
A significant 80 - 90% of suicide cases are caused by depression. It is concerning that teenagers are particularly vulnerable to depression, with adolescents aged 15-24 having a depression rate of 6.2%.
According to one of the psychologists and lecturers at IIK Bhakta, Ms. Puput Mariyati, M.Psi.Psychologist, depression in an individual can be attributed to many factors. Even in terms of personality, those who lean towards perfectionism are more susceptible to depression. Generally, the symptoms do not arise from a single factor but are multifactorial, including:
Genetic Factors à Is there a family history of previous depression? Biological Factors à Is there an increase in cortisol hormone related to stress, or does the patient's brain easily react to stress, thereby triggering psychosocial factors as well? Psychosocial Factors à The occurrence of traumatic events in the patient's life, such as job loss, loss of a loved one (due to death), repeated failures, and so on.
There is no definite way to prevent depression. However, you can take the following steps:
Practice stress management techniques to enhance your resilience and self-confidence. Seek closeness with family and friends, especially during difficult times, to help you get through. Promptly seek treatment when early signs of depression appear to prevent it from worsening. Watch the full review only on the Official IIK Bhakta YouTube channel!
