No exception in institutions of higher education, several campuses set online lecture policies to break the chain of COVID-19 distribution. This is also applied by the IIK Bhakti Wiyata Kediri campus which is the first health institution in Indonesia and has been recognized by MURI. Dyah Aryantini, M.Sc., Apt., A Faculty of Pharmacy lecturer who is one of the lecturers who apply online learning for their students. "During the COVID-19 pandemic, we educators in universities must continue to be active, creative, hyperactive, and proactive, especially in the dharma of higher education," she said when contacted via video conference. But Dyah also admitted that online lectures were not as easy as imagined. For Dyah, this is not the first time she has taught online, "IIK Bhakti Wiyata has long been applying online lectures, even the campus provides a special platform for it before this pandemic attacks 20% of lectures on our campus online, then this condition (pandemic COVID-19) that made the lecture finally 100% online."
As a lecturer, Dyah must ensure that the learning outcomes provided through online classes can be understood by students. For her this is a big responsibility of a lecturer, "A big task that needs to be carefully thought out, especially as we are in the field of health education, the students I teach today might be at the forefront if we face pandemic conditions like this". The lecturer who teaches phytochemical courses can teach online twice a day with a period of 1.5 hours each session. "I have to think of learning approaches that are suitable for my students so they do not get bored and keep focused," she explained. 1. Create a Class Schedule Reminder
Online lectures are indeed practical, can be done anytime and anywhere, especially if we are at home whose atmosphere is not the atmosphere of the campus. According to Dyah, it is important to make a reminder of the lecture and student schedule. This can maintain a commitment to the agreed schedule.
2. Time Management
The duration in online lectures cannot be compared to conventional lectures, besides. According to online lectures, it will feel more tiring than conventional lectures, this is because positions that are not ergonomic such as eyes staring at the screen for too long, sitting position, light, etc., especially not all places residence is designed for the workplace.
3. Choose a Comfortable and Quiet Location
Although online lectures can be delivered anywhere, this doesn’t mean that all locations are suitable for carrying out online lectures. "I still prefer to go to a room or another space to focus on for it is relaxed and quite, because the noise around can be a contact barrier between lecturer and students," she said.
4. Give Tasks that Stimulate Understanding But Do Not Overwhelm Students
When conducting lectures, Dyah always applies student-centered learning. According to her, lecturers are not the only source of learning. “For example, in phytochemical science that is studied is active compounds in medicinal plants. I asked the students to build a vlog to study of medicinal plants in the kitchen or around their houses, but the reviews tend to relate to the research findings reported in journals.” In this way, she hoped that students would not be burdened with assignments but also appreciated the assignments and most importantly, that students understood learning outcomes. "The students will discover new knowledge by studying in the natural world that will be inspired to disccover out more so that they will want to know and have the mentality to still seek for improvement,” she said.
5. As much as possible Video Conference
Communication is very important in the online lecture. There is a lot of online lecture method but Dyah prefers video conference for face to face interaction indirectly can increase the effectiveness of lectures. Dyah explained that sometimes some students tricked into college by putting up only photographs so that the lecturer could not monitor whether the students attended the lectures properly. Anticipating this, Dyah mentioned the names of students at random to answer questions or was required to ask me so students could focus and feel considered.
Dyah explained that online lectures have advantages and disadvantages compared to face-to-face lectures, "Easy online lectures can be done anytime and anywhere, but for certain materials such as practicum, for example, it will be easier if done face-to-face, practicum atmosphere, demonstrating clearly, that is not in online lectures." Dyah is optimistic that this pandemic will end soon and hopes to be able to feel the campus atmosphere that is irreplaceable by online lectures and of course, all the IIK Bhakti Wiyata academics have also missed various events and other organizational activities at IIK BW which are very useful in building soft skills and student leadership.
Collaboration with Telkomsel for Free E-Learning Quota
To support online lectures to run smoothly and optimally, IIK Bhakti Wiyata collaborates with the largest cellular telephone company, Telkomsel. In this case, the collaboration is carried out by granting a free 30 GB internet quota for one month's usage. This package is called Ilmupedia.
